[HOCHTIEF AG - 08.09.2015] CIMICs Leighton Contractors awarded Vic level crossing removals contract

CIMIC Groups construction company, Leighton Contractors, has been awarded an Alliance contract with the Victorian Government to design and construct four of Melbournes level crossing removals.
The $481.2 million project will generate revenue of approximately $347 million for Leighton Contractors over the next three years. CIMIC Group Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marcelino Fernández Verdes said: "Australias pipeline of new and upgraded infrastructure projects continues to create demand for CIMIC and Leighton Contractors capabilities across multiple sectors. Our end-to-end services are supporting public and private sector clients in the delivery of important economic infrastructure."
Leighton Contractors Managing Director Román Garrido said: "We will be working with our Alliance partners to ensure these Level Crossing Removal projects achieve their objectives to improve safety, relieve traffic congestion and increase rail network efficiency.
"Delivery through the design and construction phases will leverage our teams road and rail experience and proven ability to manage complex interfaces between construction, rail operations and live traffic".
Alliance participants include Leighton Contractors, Aurecon and Hyder Consulting with VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM).
The project will remove level crossings at Furlong and Main roads in St Albans, Heatherdale Rd in Mitcham and Blackburn Rd in Blackburn.
At each location, the rail line will be lowered under the road. St Albans, Ginifer and Heatherdale stations will be re-built with platforms below street level and Blackburn Station will be upgraded.
Works will begin at Main Road and Furlong Road in a matter of weeks and will be completed in 2017. The removal of Heatherdale and Blackburn Road level crossings will start later this year and will take 12-18 months to complete.
The project is part of the Victorian governments commitment to remove at least 20 level crossings over four years.
The $481.2 million project includes $151 million from the Australian government towards the Main Road level crossing removal in St Albans.
