John Holland has been awarded the contract to deliver the $365 million Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment project by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). John Holland will deliver the project under a Managing Contractor (MC) relationship model in joint venture with Fairbrother.
The redevelopment of the hospital is a complex project which will be delivered in a brownfields environment across two separable portions including construction over an operating facility. The scope of the project includes construction of a new building of two towers and ten storeys to accommodate operating theatres, womens clinics, endoscopy, paediatrics, maternity and mental health functions together with the refurbishment of existing clinical areas and site wide infrastructure upgrades.
Leighton Holdings Chief Executive Officer, Hamish Tyrwhitt, said the project would greatly enhance health services currently available in Tasmania.
"Over the years John Holland has been a part of the delivery of major building works in Tasmania including the completed Medical Science Building Stages 1 and 2, Risdon Prison Expansion, and it is currently constructing the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, Mr Tyrwhitt said.
"The award of this multifaceted project underscores the expertise and diversity of the Leighton Group as we deliver complex projects across a range of sectors. Social infrastructure - encompassing educational facilities, correctional facilities and hospitals - is one of Leightons core competencies and it will continue to play an important part of our diverse portfolio as the nation moves to address its infrastructure deficit.
Group Managing Director, Glenn Palin, said the contract provides the opportunity for John Holland to develop relationships with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
"Our existing relationship with Fairbrother will assist with a smooth transition toward project delivery and the development of a program of works that will minimise disruption to the hospital and accelerate the safe delivery of the project to the Department and people of Tasmania, he said.
"We are excited to be part of this important project, which will deliver lasting economic benefits to the state and a large number of new employment opportunities.
Stage 1 of the MCs services (completion of the Detailed Design and establishment of the GCS) is scheduled to commence later this month and Stage 2 construction works are scheduled for completion in June 2017.
